Lighting Product Development and Management
The advancement in technology has witnessed the lighting sector develop state-of-the artwork lighting products to enhance the livelihood of people especially in their homes and workplace. Lighting industry players are ever in the lookout for new developments in this sector. They are working tooth and nail to ensure that they develop smart lighting systems that can meet people’s lighting needs in this digital era.
As technology progresses, most of the current incandescent light bulbs are nearly becoming obsolete. There are two types of lighting technologies that are poised to take the place of these incandescent light bulbs and these are compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs). In the last few years, LED technology has experienced remarkable gains leading to improvement in the efficacy of LED lighting solutions.
There is a compelling urge for lighting industry players to take keen research and development initiatives in their lighting products. This will help them determine key areas that need a lot of improvement in order for their technologies to keep in tandem with the ever progressing technology. Most of the major areas that require improvement include; innovative packaging, color stability, product reliability and life, power supplies, and value addition.
It’s common knowledge that if lighting industry players particularly in LED technology put more capabilities in packaging, they are most likely to create cost effective lighting fixtures. Replacing the functionality in LED luminaire and then embedding it with a chip would allow it to be more cost effective and much more effectual. There needs to be more development and research about how to bring the traditional packaging structure to chip level.
There is need to shift LED power supplies from the conventional fragile components such as electrolytic capacitors to more robust GaN-based power electronics that are smaller, cheaper and efficient. More development should be emphasized on the reliability of individual parts to improve their lifetime and reliability. Stakeholders in the lighting industry must take more emphasis on the development of smarter lighting metrics that may detect and predict failures that might occur from the light fixtures. They need to also develop products which are forces surge resistant in order to avoid the abnormalities which are caused by such surges.
Color shift in lighting fixtures has been a big issue in the lighting technology. There is need for the lighting industry to develop product with color stability, is reliable and longer-lasting. There’s more that should be done in order to have an extensive understanding of the very acceptable color changes and mechanisms in lighting.
With all these in mind, most light companies can develop products which satisfy the present needs in lighting technology. Consequently, product development and management should take center stage in light companies if they ever want to keep in line with the changing technology.
